Why some people can’t switch off at night

Others, on the other hand, regularly stay up late into the night, even though the next day starts early.

A US study now shows that this behavior has less to do with a lack of discipline than with emotional patterns.

Going to bed late is often no coincidence

Many people are familiar with the feeling of putting off sleep: checking your phone one last time, reading or streaming something.

Researchers do not see this as purely a time problem. Rather, there are many indications that inner tension plays a central role.

Those who find it difficult to relax in the evening often use the late hours as the only time without external obligations.

What the study examined

Scientists at the University of Utah followed several hundred young adults over a period of two weeks.

The participants recorded their sleep times and answered questions about their mood, stress levels, and personality.

The aim was to identify correlations between emotional experiences and sleep behavior.

Fewer positive feelings, more inner turmoil

The evaluation showed a clear pattern: people who regularly went to bed very late reported positive emotions less often.

At the same time, brooding, restlessness, and negative thoughts occurred more frequently. Study leader Steven Carlson explained that although many of those affected were physically tired, they were unable to switch off mentally.

Differences between morning and evening types

People with an early sleep pattern more often described their everyday life as stable and balanced. Late sleepers, on the other hand, often experienced their days as more intense, but also more stressful.

For some, the late evening became a kind of protected time that they were reluctant to give up.

Why getting enough sleep remains important

Chronic sleep deprivation can impair concentration, mood, and resilience.

Experts recommend that adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night. In the long term, too little sleep can also have serious health consequences.
